My workflows do not activate except in manual.

I installed the custom workflow activities and began testing them to make sure they work correctly.  Most worked without an issue but I cannot seem to get them or any workflow to work in anything other than manual mode.  They won't trigger from either an update or a new item added.  I can find no settings that are wrong and the 'start workflow when item created' and the 'start workflow when item changed' checkboxes are checked.
Has anybody run into this before and does anyone know of a possible solution?
